MARY BEANEY
ABOUT
I have been painting seriously since 1987. I studied four years, part-time, for the Fine Art Diploma at the Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology (now known as The Southdown College) under the auspices of the Brighton University.
I have investigated various forms of media - oils, printmaking, drawing and ceramics - to represent my thoughts and emotions in an art form. I have at the present time settled on the use of acrylics on various surfaces - canvas, card, board, plaster.
I tackle various subjects - portraiture, still life, flowers, and landscapes.
My work evolves from an instinctive response to the Sussex landscape. Having made sketches in situ I then work on my paintings in my studio, using acrylic and mixed media, building up with subtle layers, often scraping back and reworking. The resultant textural surface reflects nature as I see it.
The inspiration for my landscape work is Pevensey Castle (I live approx.200 yards from the Castle Walls). I am not influenced by any artist in particular but do look to the likes of Tapies and Rothko for texture and colour.
At present I am working on a project incorporating the use of mixed media and collage with a photographic element which uses the images from a Victorian Photo Album of my ancesters. This work is loosely based on Byzantine Icons.
